Where to Store Your Luggage in Les Houches Before the Tour du Mont Blanc?

Les Houches is the official starting point of the Tour du Mont Blanc — but before lacing up your hiking boots, a very practical problem comes up for many hikers: what do you do with everything that doesn't fit in your backpack? Travel suitcase, laptop, city clothes, chargers, ID documents... These items have no place on the trail, but they still need to go somewhere for 7 to 11 days.

Why the detour via Chamonix lockers is a bad idea

The most common reflex is to think "I'll drop my things at the Chamonix station lockers before starting". On paper, it sounds logical. In practice, it costs a lot of time and energy on departure day itself.

  • An extra round trip, on the worst possible day: you first need to reach Chamonix, drop off your things, then take a bus or train back to Les Houches. On a day already packed with logistics (car, tickets, first kilometres of walking), that's an hour or more lost.
  • Limited spots in high season: the Chamonix station lockers are in high demand from passing tourists in July and August. There's no guarantee a locker will be available when you arrive.
  • A cost that adds up over 7 to 11 days: most lockers charge by the day. Over the course of a full TMB, the bill climbs quickly — not counting the round trip needed to collect your things afterwards.

The risks of leaving valuables in a car boot

Many hikers think it's enough to pack everything into the car boot for the duration of the trek. That's a false good idea, for two specific reasons.

  • Summer heat: in July-August, a car boot in direct sun can exceed 60°C. Laptops, batteries, electronic devices and even some documents (laminated ID cards) don't handle prolonged exposure to these temperatures well over several days.
  • Security: a boot visible from outside, or simply loaded with items, remains a target. In an unsupervised public car park for 7 to 11 days, the risk of break-in theft is real — far more than for a few hours of parking.

The golden rule stays the same as for long-stay parking: leave nothing visible or sensitive in a vehicle left to itself for several days.

The ParkTMB solution in Les Houches: secure storage with our local partners

Rather than losing time in Chamonix or taking a risk with the car boot, ParkTMB is developing a luggage storage service directly in Les Houches, right by the starting arch. The idea: entrust your belongings to a local shopkeeper or a verified host, exactly like for parking. Expect an indicative rate from €4 to €5 per bag, per day.

  • Steps from the start: no more detour via Chamonix, your suitcase stays right there in Les Houches.
  • Trusted partners: local shopkeepers and hosts already verified by our team for parking.
  • A combined solution: if you've booked a TMB parking spot in Les Houches, drop your things off with the same host or nearby — one single point of trust for your departure.
